As a volunteer in the local Girl Scout community, it's my job to be a positive role model for the girls in the troop. Along with the other volunteers we facilitate opportunities for the girls to grow as members of the community. We do this in many ways, and the artifacts below are just some of the ways our girls are learning to be responsible, caring and functioning members of the community and fantastic individuals.
Our girls are becoming active members in the community by participating in the ground breaking ceremony of the new charter school. The girls led the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance before the start of the ceremony, as well as having the opportunity to break ground with the teachers and community officials.
Our girls are learning about the true meaning of community. They participated in the closing flag ceremony with their service unit Camporee, along with a hundred other girls. The girls learned that there are more scouts, than they realize and that they are all sisters. This was a great opportunity for them to see how we can all be different, but have the same values- a great lesson in diversity. Some of these girls also participated in the 100yr Bridging ceremony at Disney's Epcot three years ago, and got to meet girls from all over the world.
We have tried to instill the idea of sisterhood with our girls. They never leave a meeting angry at each other and always end with a friendship circle. The girls are from different schools, and are different ages, and all have different family types, but they all respect each other no matter what.
What a better way for the girls to learn about community, and government than getting to meet and spend time with our local mayor. We are the first Girl Scout troop in our community to ask to meet the mayor. The girls had a chance to learn about the local government and what it takes to be a mayor.
One of our many service projects is the one below. The girls spent the day weeding the local community garden and planted vegetables in their own garden plot. They are taking turns caring for the plants and when they harvest their food, they are donating it all to a local soup kitchen and food bank. The girls will also help prepare any meals the soup kitchen prepares with this food and serve the community. This is a great lesson in putting others first and caring for those who cannot care for themselves.
